Welcome

Welcome to my new photography blog, here you will see some of my most recent work as wedding photographer here in San Francisco and the bay area. I have shot weddings throughout California including San Diego, Sonoma, Lodi, and Napa. You might also find a few posts about friends and family as well, at least giving you a glimpse into what I am up to when I am not shooting weddings. Thanks for stopping by!

A little background on me...I have been taking pictures since high school and have always been the guy taking 200 pictures of friends on a random night out. About 3 years ago I really started to spend a lot of time on my photography and once I started to captured some great pictures I was totally hooked. As you can probably see I work in all kinds of photography, wedding, landscape, cityscape, skylines, engagement, portrait, I just think that there is a ton to learn and love picking up a new style or technique. Feel free to click around and of course I would love to hear your feedback (good or bad) on anything that you see, I think that'll make me a better photographer.

Of course if you have any questions feel free to send me an email or visit my other more "professional" looking website @ www.zachanderson.com

Paige and Ben - Seattle, WA

So Paige is married and I love Seattle.  Em and I spent the weekend with most of my good friends from Seattle to celebrate an awesome and unique wedding of one of my closest girlfriends.  I didnt really spend that much time taking pictures cause I was to busy dancing to A-Ha’s Take on Me and enjoying the open bar but I was still able to get some fun party shots of everyone.  As always it was a blast to see everyone, and congrats Ben and Paige!

These first two are from Dev’s ridiculous house on Lake Washington.

San Francisco Skyline

I love being in the right place at the right time.  It was just one of those nights…things started off pretty slow and then all of the sudden there was more color than I have ever witnessed before.  I added a screengrab of my desktop just to show you how ridiculous this sunset was.  It shows the original untouched image on the left and the final version.  Not much difference.

I had a really hard time picking a favorite so your about to get a whole lot o’ color dumped your way.  I know that most of them are very similar, but it kinda shows the progression throughout the night which I thought was cool….enjoy!

It Rains in San Francisco and the Cougs are awful.

Just had a wild weekend with the old college crew.  We decided to spend Saturday watching our beloved WSU Cougars get destroyed by Stanford in AWESOME weather.

It was that exciting…

Maybe the best part of the night was when we were at City tavern and we saw our good friend and talented sports reporter on the the big screen.  Below you’ll see her draining J’s at the pop-a-shot earlier, and a quick photo of her conducting a fantastic interview.  We all felt like proud parents.

I would post another pick of you Brooke but this is the best one I got that wouldn’t completely embarrass you.

Sunday with the Stanbery’s

I had the joy of hangin with ths Stanbery’s this past Sunday for some family photos.  As you will probably see this is really just a bunch of super fun pics of them hanging out in Yerba Buena park and less posed family portraits.  I think it worked well :)

Enjoy a little slideshow action to get a full feel for the afternoon or just enjoy the pictures below…

They are a little hard to wrangle…as Ryan demonstrates here.

Drew and Vy’s Wedding- San Diego, CA

****************UPDATED WITH A SLIDESHOW!****************

May take just a minute to load…but its worth it.

I know you weren’t aware that you were hiring an arch rival, but I think things worked pretty good anyways…

vs.

Drew and Vy had me come down from San Francisco to be a part of there amazing wedding weekend in one of my favorite spots in the country and former home, beautiful San Diego, CA.  Its always nice to get back to SoCal and you guys made it a great weekend for all of us.  Thanks for everything and enjoy the photos!

The wedding took place up in La Jolla at a great church called All Hallows with an amazing glass window at the very back.  We watched a slightly long, but amazing ceremony and I was able to catch one of my favorites from the day from up in the cheap seats.

But before that, heres Jay getting his speech all wrapped up…

The rings…

One of those natural smiles…

A couple shots from the grassy lookout…

The “We’re Badass” shot

Now this was a couple that was truly after my heart.  On the way to the reception Drew insisted on stopping for Mexican food at Roberto’s.  Is there anything better than Carne Asada and marriage?

Maybe a few rolled taco’s…

Gotta love how Drew didnt put down his Taco for this shot…

And some sunset portraits at the Marina…

A quick dance shot…

As always…would love to hear your comments!

Drew and Vy - Just one….

What an awesome weekend with you guys…lots more coming soon!

Camera Recommendations - Point and Shoot

I get asked this question all the time from my friends so I figured I would write up a little post about it so anyone who was in the market could take a look and get some info.  One thing to remember right off the bat is that Megapixels are not that important.  You should be fine with any camera that has over 6MP unless you plan on blowing up your images beyond 8×10, which I know for most of you in unlikely.

Right now I have an Canon 870IS (below).  It is a fantastic camera with 8 megapixels and Image stabilization, which basically means that the camera will help keep your hand steady when taking a picture in low light or when your using the zoom capabilities.  Its got a fantastic large lcd screen and is super easy to use.  One of my favorite things about this camera is its movie mode, you can shoot regular and time lapse video and the quality if pretty good.  Another aspect that made me select this camera is the wide angle capabilities, it really helps to capture more of the scene when shooting landscapes or outdoors.

Note: There is actually a newer model of the 800 series canon’s called the 880IS, its a great camera as well but really didnt add anything that the 870IS doesnt have besides a few megapixels (which we now know are not that important)

Cost as of 10/8/08 - $226  (Click on the price to see it on amazon.com)

If your looking for something a little cheaper the Canon SD750 is a fantastic option.  I know alot of our friends have this camera because of the good price and the big LCD screen on the back.  It lacks Image Stabilization and doesnt feel quite as sturdy as the 800-series canons, but is a good option for a little less money.

I used this camera until someone stole it at the 49ers game.  Stupid 9ers fans.

Cost: $200 (click price to head to amazon.com)

For those of you who put a beating on your camera (ERIN LAUDERMILK) by dropping it on the ground, in water, etc.  The Olympus Stylus 1030SW might be the best bet for you.  Its built to be dropped and really can handle a rougher environment.  But the best thing about this camera is its underwater capabilities, most of these cameras you can buy a cheap underwater housing to do the same thing but the Olympus comes ready for a dip right out of the box.  Its good to go for a swim down to 33 feet and Dev and Erin would proclaim that its the camera for them.

Cost:  $300

If you looking for a step up from your basic point shoot and maybe see your self wanting to learn how to manipulate your cameras aperture and shutter speed.  Canon has a high powered compact camera called the G10.   This camera has alot of the capabilites of an SLR in a nice compact package.  Its has a 14.7MP sensor and also has Image stabilization but the real benefits from this camera are in its ability to get out of AUTO mode and manage all of the camera’s settings manually to get the image that you want.  If your looking for a camera that will help you to become a better photographer, this is a great option and it’ll still fit in your pocket.

Price as of 10/10/08 - $493 (click to head to amazon.com)

Another option in the same boat as the G10 is new panasonic lumix DMC-LX3.  It has a 10.1 MP sensor and also has Image stabilization .  This camera also has alot of capabilities to take your camera out of auto mode and manage your own settings.  This one is a little more unique because it will also record HD video @ 1080i (similar to most HD cable content)

Cost: $461

Jim and Sarah - Newport, RI

Ah….New england in the fall.  I had the privelage of being a part of one of my best friends wedding’s this past weekend.  It ONLY took me 9 hours to get there from San Francisco, but once I arrived it was all worthwhile.

We stayed at the beautiful Howard Johnson in Newport proper….im sure they were glad to see us go.  The wedding took place at a super cool hotel called the Ocean Cliff and the reception followed right inside.  Besides the fact that I almost passed out while standing in the groomsmen line, the weekend went off beautifully.  Thanks to Jim and Sarah for an awesome weekend…. it wasgreat to see everyone and lets do it again….but not anytime soon.

Just a note to any wedding clients: I was in this wedding so most of these are just party shots.  I wanted to enjoy myself and not worry to much about pictures (although I ended up with 500 of them, weird)

Love the vintage look of these shots…
